Central Marin Sanitation Agency

The Central Marin Sanitation Agency (CMSA) regional wastewater treatment plant is part of an environmentally sensitive system designed to collect, pump, treat and dispose of wastewater from most of Central Marin County. It is modeled after the natural disinfection and filtration cycles of the earth.

Advantages of a Regional Plant

The regional plant allows the individual member agencies to save money on treatment costs, which would be much higher if each agency operated its own treatment facility.

The agencies not only share facilities and advanced technology but also participate in joint planning and cooperation, which provides for a higher level of service at a lower cost.

The plant itself is designed to be cost-effective and energy efficient.

Plant Flows

Wastewater flows to the plant are approximately 8 million gallons per day in dry weather. Rain-induced flows have reached 115 million gallons per day. Due to this large range of flows, the facilities were designed with extra settling tanks, a large-capacity effluent disinfection system, and a 2-mile long, seven-foot diameter marine outfall.
